Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that a company in California was recalling a specific lot of egg burrito products labeled as chicken burrito products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens. The burritos contained eggs, a known allergen, which were not declared on the product labels.
The problem was reportedly discovered after FSIS and the company received consumer complaints reporting that the cilantro lime chicken burritos were actually egg burritos. While there were no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these burritos at the time of the recall notice, FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers.
The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include eggs, wheat, milk, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts and soybeans.
“Egg allergies are one of the most common food-related allergies in children,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Symptoms typically appear within a few minutes up to several hours, after eggs are consumed. Anyone with an egg allergy who accidently consumes a product containing them could also experience a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.”
The food scientists at LA Testing help food manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and health officials with FALCPA and other labeling and testing requirements. They offer a wide range of food testing and labeling services that can be essential for preventing costly product recalls and protect the public from inadvertently consuming products with known allergens.
