The Los Angeles Times recently published an article about parts of South Los Angeles and exposure risks to lead that are still causing elevated lead levels in the blood of too many children. The report specifically mentions problems due to lead-based paints that could be in countless homes constructed and renovated before the ban on these paints that took effect in 1978.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if a home was built before 1978 there is a good chance it has lead-based paint. The agency also shares the fact that lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.
Lead-based paint can still be found both on the inside and outside of homes and buildings. As the paint deteriorates, as often happens over time and in areas that get a lot of wear and tear, it can pose a serious health concern. This can be in the form of paint chips or dust that can contaminate the inside of a property or the soil around a building.
“The good news is testing for lead on the inside or outside of a home, and even from water sources, is affordable and quick,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, we provide lead analysis from dust, paint chips, soil, water and many other sources. Our facilities in California also offer sampling supplies and we carry a line of easy-to-use test kits for lead and other common exposure risks.”
