Huntington Beach, CA, February 21st, 2019
The Santa Monica Daily Press recently published an article examining the connection between indoor carpeting and potential exposure to allergens and respiratory irritants that can trigger or aggravate allergies in some people.
The piece discussed everything from off-gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from carpets and padding to potential exposure to chemicals used for waterproofing, antimicrobial treatments and flame retardants. It also reports on the importance of regular cleaning with vacuum cleaner that has HEPA filtration to prevent the buildup of mold, dust mites, dust and other allergens that can be tracked on and settle in carpets.
“Whether building a new home or commercial building, remodeling or repairing a property, choosing the type of flooring to be installed is an important decision,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This is especially true for people that suffer from allergies and other respiratory conditions. Carpets remain a popular choice due to their cost, warmth and the large selection of available colors, patterns and fibers. Carpets also have additional advantages, such as their insulating and noise dampening properties, and the short period of time it takes to be installed. However, there are many other options that might be a better fit for those with moderate to severe allergies. Tile, stone, wood, cork and even some types of vinyl flooring that emit low amounts of VOCs might be a better fit in some circumstances.”
California residents that suspect their carpeting may be causing indoor environmental quality (IEQ) issues in their home or office can turn to LA Testing for answers. With multiple laboratories throughout the state, they offer testing services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to identify mold, dust mites and other common indoor environmental allergens. LA Testing also provides VOC analysis. The company has also sponsored an educational video about some of the pros and cons of carpets and potential IEQ issues that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/vZ8bHl-5NzQ.
