Fungal Disease Awareness Week (FDAW) takes place September 14th through 18th, marking its 10th anniversary. Promoted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and its partners, FDAW highlights the importance of recognizing, diagnosing, treating, and preventing fungal diseases.
According to the CDC, fungal diseases are increasing worldwide as more fungi develop resistance to antifungal medications. Infections range from common conditions to life-threatening illnesses. While people with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk, environmental fungi can also cause respiratory issues in healthy individuals.
Antifungal resistance remains a critical concern. Some fungi are becoming resistant to all available drug classes, including Candida auris (C. auris), which causes severe, multidrug-resistant infections that spread easily in healthcare settings. In 2024, 6,304 clinical cases were reported in the United States, continuing an upward trend since 2016.
“People with weakened immune systems face heightened risk, but elevated fungal exposure can affect others as well,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In the built environment, airborne fungi can trigger respiratory irritation, allergies, and asthma. Identifying microbial contamination helps support healthier indoor spaces.”
LA Testing supports healthcare facilities and building professionals with indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and infection control testing to identify microbial contaminants. Its California laboratories also supply sampling materials, test kits, air monitoring instruments, inspection tools, and protective equipment.
