Latex allergy, an ongoing occupational and environmental health concern, is caused by proteins found in natural rubber latex derived from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). While latex remains common in many consumer and industrial products, increased awareness and regulation, especially in California, are changing how exposure risks are managed in workplaces and public settings.
In California, where worker safety and public health protections often lead the nation, latex exposure has received heightened scrutiny. The state’s Latex Glove Safety Law, which took effect in 2020, prohibits latex gloves and utensils in food service operations and retail food facilities. This regulation reflects a broader shift, with many hospitals, laboratories, and medical centers across the state moving away from latex-based products.
Sensitivity to latex can develop over time, with reactions ranging in severity. Common types include:
- Irritant Contact Dermatitis
- Allergic Contact Dermatitis (delayed hypersensitivity)
- Latex Allergy (immediate hypersensitivity)
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the amount of exposure needed to trigger sensitization is unknown, but increased exposure raises the risk of allergic symptoms. In sensitized individuals, reactions may occur within minutes or be delayed for several hours. Symptoms can range from mild skin irritation, rashes, hives, or itching—to respiratory issues such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and asthma. In rare cases, severe reactions like anaphylactic shock may occur.
“California continues to set the pace in reducing latex exposure risks,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “From statewide regulations to institutional changes, organizations are taking meaningful steps to limit exposure. Testing and awareness remain critical.”
LA Testing supports businesses, building managers, and occupational health professionals with environmental testing services for latex and other allergens. These services help identify hidden exposure risks, support regulatory compliance, and protect building occupant health. The company also offers sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, and an educational video on latex allergy: https://youtu.be/X6BTxz7Kv68
