Asbestos Testing Services

Asbestos was widely used in construction throughout much of the 20th century, with use declining in the 1970s after serious health risks associated with asbestos fiber exposure became more widely recognized.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), homeowners generally cannot determine whether a material contains asbestos by sight alone. When asbestos is suspected, materials should be left undisturbed, especially during remodeling or when building materials are damaged. The EPA recommends hiring trained and accredited professionals when asbestos may be present.

While federal law does not require asbestos inspectors or abatement workers in detached single-family homes to be accredited, some states and local jurisdictions do impose such requirements. In California, only a Cal/OSHA-Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) may provide asbestos consulting services. However, contractors with AHERA-certified asbestos inspector training are permitted to collect up to 12 samples in residential dwellings for limited purposes such as bid preparation or employee safety.

“Many older building materials that contain asbestos can still be found in homes throughout California,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Long-term inhalation of asbestos fibers is known to increase the risk of mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer.”
