The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) announced earlier this year that it was investigating cases of Legionnaires’ disease linked to a luxury resort and casino property in Las Vegas. At least two travel-associated cases had been identified in individuals who stayed at the property.

 

According to SNHD, environmental sampling conducted at the facility detected the presence of Legionella, the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease.

 

Following these findings, the property implemented immediate and comprehensive remediation measures targeting its water systems. Ongoing monitoring and follow-up testing have also been conducted to help ensure water safety.

 

“Legionella occurs naturally in water environments and can be found in building water systems under certain conditions,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Common sources include cooling towers, potable water systems, hot tubs, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems, and decorative fountains. When the bacteria grow and spread, they can pose a health risk if contaminated water droplets are inhaled, potentially leading to Legionnaires’ disease or Pontiac fever, particularly among vulnerable populations.”
