LA Testing is raising awareness about the continued risk of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposure from legacy building materials, particularly caulking used in structures built or renovated between the 1950s and late 1970s.

Although PCBs were banned in the United States in 1979 due to their toxicity and persistence in the environment, these chemicals remain present in many older buildings. One often-overlooked source is caulk and sealants, which were commonly manufactured with PCBs for durability and flexibility. Over time, these materials can degrade, releasing PCBs into indoor air, dust, and surrounding surfaces.

Exposure to PCBs has been linked to a range of adverse health effects, including impacts on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system, and endocrine function. PCBs are also classified as probable human carcinogens. Individuals may be exposed through inhalation of contaminated air, ingestion of dust, or direct contact with affected materials.

Schools, commercial buildings, and multifamily housing units constructed during the era of PCB use are of particular concern. Disturbing old caulking without proper precautions can significantly increase exposure risks for workers and occupants alike.
