According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus are among the most common molds found indoors. Cladosporium includes numerous species, many of which form fungal colonies that may appear olive, brown, or black in color.
Cladosporium spores occur naturally outdoors and are present year-round in many regions. Indoors, this mold is frequently associated with humid conditions, wet surfaces, and buildings that have experienced water intrusion or damage.
Elevated concentrations of Cladosporium, whether indoors or outdoors, are a well-known cause of allergic reactions and may trigger asthma attacks in some individuals. Inhalation of Cladosporium or other fungi can also irritate the respiratory system and pose concerns for people with existing respiratory conditions. While rare, certain Cladosporium species are considered opportunistic human pathogens and have been linked to skin, eye, sinus, or lung infections.
“While most healthy individuals typically do not become ill after exposure to fungal opportunistic pathogens, the risk can be greater for people with compromised immune systems,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “High levels of Cladosporium and other fungi are particularly concerning in environments that serve vulnerable populations, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.”
To help identify mold and other microbial contaminants, LA Testing operates multiple laboratories throughout California, providing environmental, industrial hygiene, infection control, and materials testing services. The company also supplies sampling media, user-friendly test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools, and personal protective equipment. In addition, LA Testing has sponsored an educational video on Cladosporium as a common indoor air quality contaminant, available at: https://youtu.be/X79DwG1yb7U
