Title Post-Rain Mold Risks Rise Across California, Experts Warn
Introduction LA Testing urges property owners and facility managers to inspect and test indoor environments before mold growth spreads and becomes costly.

Huntington Beach, California, March 9, 2026

As California transitions from winter into spring, environmental health experts are warning property owners statewide about an increased risk of mold growth following seasonal rain and prolonged moisture exposure.

LA Testing, an environmental, indoor air quality (IAQ), and industrial hygiene laboratory serving clients throughout California, reports that post-rain conditions can create ideal environments for mold to develop in homes, commercial buildings, schools, and industrial facilities—often without visible warning signs.

“Mold growth frequently begins behind walls, above ceilings, and within HVAC systems after prolonged moisture exposure,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “By the time it becomes visible or noticeable by odor, it may already be affecting indoor air quality and occupant health.”

March is a critical time for mold testing, as winter storms and rainfall, particularly in regions that experienced heavier-than-average precipitation, can leave lingering moisture in building materials well into early spring. As temperatures rise, trapped moisture can accelerate mold growth, increasing the risk of respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and long-term structural damage.

Environmental testing conducted in early spring allows property owners and facility managers to identify mold concerns before they spread or require extensive and costly remediation.

Buildings most vulnerable to post-rain mold growth include:

  • Properties with roof leaks, plumbing issues, or poor drainage
  • Older structures with limited ventilation
  • Schools and childcare facilities returning to full occupancy
  • Commercial and industrial buildings with complex HVAC systems

Even well-maintained buildings can experience hidden moisture issues following seasonal storms.

Mold testing and indoor air quality assessments provide data-driven insight into potential risks, helping property owners make informed decisions to protect occupants and comply with environmental health standards. Early detection helps prevent widespread contamination, supports healthier indoor air, and reduces long-term costs.
