In 2019, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) announced a major initiative to encourage safer alternatives to toluene, a toxic chemical commonly found in nail products. Toluene was identified by the agency as a significant health risk to nail salon workers and their clients.
Toluene (C7H8) is a volatile organic compound (VOC) used in many industrial processes and consumer goods. It is often present in paints, thinners, fingernail polish, spot removers, lacquers, adhesives, rubber, and antifreeze.
DTSC’s recent update specifically highlights the state’s 131,000 licensed nail technicians, among more than 300,000 cosmetologists, who provide nail care and design services across California.
According to DTSC:
DTSC tested more than 500 nail products from 142 unique brands for toluene. Nail products were purchased from online retainers and brick-and-mortar stores including independent shops, professional beauty supply chains and discount stores. DTSC’s analysis shows that 95% of the nail products purchased either did not contain toluene or contained very low levels, well below the regulatory threshold.
“Toluene was added to California’s Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause developmental toxicity back in 1991,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This announcement from DTSC is encouraging news for salon workers and customers alike. However, it is also important to remember that many other occupations involve potential toluene exposure, these workers also deserve enhanced protection.”
LA Testing supports these efforts by offering advanced testing services for toluene and other chemicals in consumer products, air, and other environmental samples. More than a decade ago, the company sponsored an educational video on toluene exposure risks, which remains available at: https://youtu.be/qcwtP1TOIME
