Title Mitigating Combustible Dust Hazards in California
Introduction LA Testing provides combustible dust laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, and air monitoring instruments to protect workers and communities, and to help companies comply with health and safety regulations.

Huntington Beach, California, January 19, 2026

Combustible dust testing is a critical safety measure for any facility that handles fine particulate materials such as wood, metal, grain, sugar, or chemicals. Even small amounts of dust can pose serious explosion and fire risks when dispersed in the air under certain conditions and exposed to an ignition source.

Testing allows companies to identify whether the materials they manage are combustible and to what degree. By understanding the specific properties of their dust, such as explosibility, ignition temperature, and particle size, businesses can design appropriate prevention and control measures before a dangerous incident occurs.

Beyond identifying risks, combustible dust testing helps facilities comply with industry regulations and standards. Agencies like the OSHA and the National Fire Protection Association have established detailed requirements for dust hazard analysis and control. Testing provides the data necessary to demonstrate compliance with these standards, ensuring that employers are meeting their legal and ethical responsibilities to provide a safe work environment. Failing to conduct adequate testing can result in severe penalties, shutdowns, or liability in the event of an accident.

“Testing also plays a vital role in informing the design and maintenance of dust collection systems, ventilation, and housekeeping procedures,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Knowing the explosibility and ignition sensitivity of a dust type allows engineers to select suitable equipment, grounding methods, and explosion protection devices. It also helps in developing effective cleaning and inspection schedules that reduce the buildup of hazardous dust layers. Without this information, safety measures may be inadequate or misapplied, leaving workers and property at risk.”

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) limits combustible dust to a concentration of 25 percent of its lower explosive limit (LEL) unless all sources of ignition are eliminated or identified and specifically controlled.

To help in this effort, LA Testing’s network of laboratories provides testing services and sampling supplies for combustible dust. They also carry a wide range of air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment.
