Huntington Beach, California, November 7, 2025
Most people have encountered the unpleasant odor of sewer gas in a home or building at some point. Beyond the smell, sewer gas raises serious concerns due to potential health risks. In extreme circumstance, there can be asphyxiation dangers and even explosion hazards. Even low levels can negatively affect indoor air quality and property values.
Sewer gas is a mixture of toxic and non-toxic gases generated during the breakdown of household and industrial waste. Common components include hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous oxides. In some cases, fumes from chlorine-based cleaners, solvents, or fuels may also be present.
To help reduce exposure, experts recommend simple preventative steps such as regularly flushing drains and plumbing fixtures to keep traps filled with water, as well as checking plumbing vents for cracks or blockages. Exhaust vents should also be installed away from ventilation intakes and windows.
“California residents who believe they may be dealing with sewer gas in their home, school, or workplace can rely on LA Testing’s indoor air quality specialists,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing in Huntington Beach. “Our laboratories across California provide detailed analytical services, sampling supplies, and real-time air monitoring solutions. When sewer gas is identified, effective remediation measures can then be put in place.”
LA Testing has also released an educational video on sewer gas exposure risks, available here: https://youtu.be/3mRydjd6uQQ
