Huntington Beach, California, November 5, 2025
Although California continues to report lower rates of new lung cancer cases compared to many other states, the disease remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. While cigarette smoking is still the primary cause of lung cancer, California benefits from having one of the lowest smoking rates in the nation.
However, lung cancer can also develop from other risk factors, including exposure to secondhand smoke and other carcinogens, as well as a family history of the disease. To highlight these risks and encourage prevention, November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Beyond tobacco smoke, exposure to substances such as radon, asbestos, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethylene oxide, diesel exhaust, and certain forms of silica and chromium can significantly increase the risk of lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses. For some people, these types of exposures could occur in the home or work environment.”
To support awareness and prevention, LA Testing’s California laboratories provide comprehensive environmental and industrial hygiene testing services. The company also supplies sampling materials, user-friendly test kits, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment. In addition, LA Testing produced an educational video on Lung Cancer Awareness Month that remains available for viewing at: https://youtu.be/LV7zwQiwaCQ
