The American Lung Association estimates that more than 1.4 million adults in California are living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Each year, COPD contributes to millions of missed workdays, billions in medical costs, and countless hospitalizations and deaths.

 

COPD is a group of progressive lung diseases, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, that cause airflow obstruction and breathing difficulties. Symptoms often mistaken for normal signs of aging include wheezing, shortness of breath, chronic cough, and chest tightness. While cigarette smoke remains the leading cause, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that workplace and household air pollutants, genetic factors, and respiratory infections can also contribute to the disease.
