Orkin has released its annual Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, and three of California’s largest metropolitan areas made the rankings. Los Angeles was the highest at #4, followed by San Francisco at #42 and San Diego at #49. The list is based on residential and commercial bed bug treatment data collected between May 15, 2024, and May 14, 2025.

 

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, elusive parasites that feed on human and animal blood, typically while their hosts are sleeping. Their ability to hide makes detection difficult, and infestations can lead to ongoing issues such as itching, allergic reactions, and sleep disruption.

 

“Fortunately, only three California cities made the list this year,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Los Angeles moved up one spot, San Francisco dropped one position, and San Diego jumped ten spots higher than last year’s ranking.”

 

Infestations remain a concern in hotels, resorts, dormitories, apartment complexes, cruise ships, and even single-family homes across California. Experts stress that identifying and addressing infestations early is far less costly and disruptive than managing a widespread problem.
