Terminix recently published its Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, and it includes two major population centers in California. The highest-ranking California city on the list was Los Angeles (4th), followed by San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose (9th). Other California cities that made the list include San Diego (32nd), Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto (33rd), and Palm Springs (49th).
Bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of people and animals, usually while they sleep. They are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. The presence of bed bugs can be an ongoing annoyance because they may cause itching and loss of sleep for people living in, or visiting, an infested property. Some people may even suffer allergic reactions to their presence.
“Los Angeles and San Francisco make it to the top of lists provided by various pest control companies for the worst bed bug infestations time after time,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Bed bug infestations continue to be a concern in hotels, resorts, dorms, apartment complexes, and even single family homes throughout the state. Businesses that encounter bed bug infestations can suffer significant economic damage due to public relations challenges. With this in mind, it’s important to recognize that treating a minor infestation is far less costly than treating an infestation that has become widespread.”
The good news is LA Testing offers a way to detect their presence.
