Title Nitrogen Dioxide Exposure Risks in California Homes, Schools, and Businesses
Introduction LA Testing provides indoor air quality and industrial hygiene testing services and sampling supplies to identify elevated concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and other airborne pollutants to protect workers and building occupants.

Huntington Beach, California, June 4, 2025

Two of the most prevalent oxides of nitrogen are nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitric oxide (NO), reports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Both are toxic gases with nitrogen dioxide being a highly reactive oxidant and corrosive.

Nitrogen dioxide primarily gets into the air from the burning of fuel. It forms from emissions from vehicles, power plants, and off-road equipment. Indoors, the primary sources listed by the EPA also come from combustion processes. These include:

  • Unvented combustion appliances, such as gas stoves
  • Vented appliances with defective installations
  • Welding
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Kerosene heaters

According to the California Air Resources Board (CARB):

A large body of health science literature indicates that exposure to NO2 can induce adverse health effects. The strongest health evidence, and the health basis for the ambient air quality standard for NO2, is results from controlled human exposure studies that show that NO2 exposure can intensify responses to allergens in allergic asthmatics. In addition, a number of epidemiological studies have demonstrated associations between NO2 exposure and premature death, cardiopulmonary effects, decreased lung function growth in children, respiratory symptoms, emergency room visits for asthma, and intensified allergic responses.

“CARB goes on to share that indoor levels of nitrogen dioxide are determined primarily by the presence of emitting appliances, the indoor-outdoor air exchange rate, and the effects of season,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Exposure to elevated concentrations of nitrogen dioxide can also be a significant occupational hazard in some settings.”

Dedicated to identifying exposure risks to nitrogen dioxide and other airborne pollutants are the scientists at LA Testing. With multiple California laboratories, they offer air quality testing services and sampling supplies to safeguard families, workers, and building occupants. LA Testing has even sponsored an educational video about nitrogen dioxide and the indoor environment that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/4i6ng9kuLkM
