Huntington Beach, California, May 19, 2025
Each year, May is celebrated as Clean Air Month in California and across the nation. Clean Air Month is an opportunity to educate people about the connection between clean air and respiratory health. It is also a time to encourage the public to take action to improve their air quality.
The air people breathe has a direct impact on their health and well-being. While the quality of the air they are exposed to outdoors is often dependent upon where they live, the indoor air of homes, schools, and businesses can usually be more easily controlled. This is significant as many people spend up to 90% of their time indoors.
A few of the common airborne pollutants that can be found inside homes and buildings across California include radon, mold, pollen, dust mites, animal dander, cockroach allergens, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, tobacco and marijuana smoke, wildfire smoke, particulate matter, asbestos fibers, lead, pesticides, cleaning chemical fumes, and sewer gas.
“Globally, the Health Effects Institute (HEI), an independent nonprofit research organization, found air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths in 2021,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “What we breathe can indeed have a significant impact on our health and how we feel. At LA Testing, we are dedicated to helping people discover what they are being exposed to in the indoor and outdoor air. With multiple California laboratories, we offer air and indoor environmental quality testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools, air monitoring instruments, and respirators and other personal protective equipment.”
Several years ago, LA Testing sponsored an educational video about Clean Air Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/mw1HtEJqVyU
