Title National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month and California Resources to Improve the Built Environment
Introduction LA Testing provides laboratory services, sampling supplies, test kits, air monitoring instruments, and building inspection tools to identify and mitigate exposure risks to a wide range of airborne pollutants in homes, schools, and businesses.

Huntington Beach, California, October 7, 2024

October is recognized as National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month. For many building occupants, a comfortable temperature and relative humidity, good ventilation, and a lack of unpleasant odors comes to mind when thinking about indoor air quality (IAQ).

It’s also important to control exposure to indoor pollutants to help reduce the risk of health concerns. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that the health effects from indoor air pollutants can be experienced soon after exposure or possibly years later.

According to the EPA, these health effects could include:

  • Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat
  • Headaches, dizziness, and fatigue
  • Respiratory diseases, heart disease, and even cancer

Common IAQ pollutants include mold, pollen, particulate matter, animal dander, bacteria, viruses, radon, formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, lead, asbestos, carbon monoxide and combustion gases, and tobacco and marijuana smoke to name just a few.

“The vast majority of Californians, even with our great weather most of the year, still spend most of their time indoors,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility.  “National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month is an important reminder that the air we are exposed to in the built environment can have a significant impact on our comfort, productivity, and health. At LA Testing, we support the efforts of National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month by offering laboratory testing services for a wide range of microbial, chemical, and radiological exposure risks. We also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools, and air monitoring instruments to help optimize indoor conditions.”

LA Testing has even sponsored an educational video about National Indoor Air Quality Awareness Month that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/RbLmbmixmOU
