Huntington Beach, California, July 19, 2024
The U.S. Census Bureau reports there are more than 39 million people living in California in over 14 million housing units. It is the nation’s most populous state and home to a large population who are conscious of their health and concerned about potential contaminants in their homes.
An all too common indoor contaminant is fungi, commonly referred to as mold. Mold can be found both indoors and outdoors. Mold multiplies by producing microscopic spores which are so small they easily float through the air and can be carried for great distances. When they come in contact with a wet or damp indoor environment they can easily begin to multiply and quickly create problems.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) shares the following about mold:
We know that dampness and mold cause health effects both in allergic and non-allergic people. If you can see mold, water damage, or moisture, or smell mold, there is at least some increased health risk. The more extensive or severe the dampness and mold, the greater the risk of health effects.
“Some of the health effects listed by CDPH that are associated with indoor dampness and mold include new cases of asthma, asthma attacks in those who already have asthma, allergic rhinitis, upper and lower respiratory symptoms, respiratory infections, eye irritation, and eczema and skin rashes,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “For anyone suffering from these conditions, indoor environmental quality testing for mold and other common respiratory irritants, allergens, and asthma triggers may be helpful to identify and mitigate these types of exposure risks.”
With multiple laboratories across California, LA Testing provides these testing resources. Their environmental laboratories also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and building inspection tools to help detect mold, moisture, and many other indoor environmental quality issues.
