Huntington Beach, California, February 28, 2024
Orkin published its annual Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list last month and it includes two major population centers in California. The highest ranking California city on the list was Los Angeles (5th) followed by the San Francisco (41st). The list was compiled from bed bug data for residential and commercial treatments from the pest control company’s operations spanning December 1st of 2022 through November 30th of 2023.
Bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of people and animals, usually while they sleep. They are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. The presence of bed bugs can be an ongoing annoyance because they may cause itching and loss of sleep for people living in, or visiting, an infested property. Some people may even suffer allergic reactions to their presence.
“Fortunately, Los Angeles and San Francisco were the only two cities in California to make this most recent list for the worst bed bug infestations,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Los Angeles remained at the 5th spot and San Francisco actually dropped 19 spots. However, bed bug infestations continue to be an ongoing concern in hotels, resorts, dorms, apartment complexes and even single family homes throughout the state.”
It is important to recognize that treating a minor infestation is far less costly than treating an infestation that has become widespread. To help in this effort, LA Testing offers a way to detect the presence of bed bugs. A collection kit allows for a dust sample to be collected and sent to the laboratory where it is analyzed using advanced DNA-based techniques. If test results indicate the insects are present, corrective actions can then be implemented to eradicate the pests before conditions get worse.
