Huntington Beach, CA, February 5, 2024
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published its annual National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries last month. It covered 2022 data, and sadly, there were 5,486 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2022, a 5.7 percent increase from the 5,190 in 2021.
Key findings from the 2022 National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include:
- A worker died every 96 minutes from a work-related injury in 2022 compared to 101 minutes in 2021.
- The fatal work injury rate was 3.7 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, up from 3.6 per 100,000 FTE in 2021.
- Exposure to harmful substances or environments increased 5.1 percent in 2022 and led to 839 worker fatalities.
“This past November, BLS also published its latest account of employer-reported workplace injuries and illnesses which showed there were also a rise in those covering the 2-year period of 2021-2022,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In that document, private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2022, up 7.5% from 2021. Both of these BLS publications reinforce the need for effective environmental, health and safety programs to identify and manage workplace hazards before they can cause an injury, illness or tragic death.”
