Title California Onion Producer Recalls Products as CDC Posts Food Safety Alert Linked to Diced Onions

Huntington Beach, CA, December 5, 2023

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted a Food Safety Alert about a Salmonella outbreak that has been linked to fresh diced onions. According to the agency, it knows of 73 illnesses and 15 hospitalizations that have taken place in 22 states that the CDC believes are associated with the contaminated onions.


The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is also investigating the outbreak and has posted information about the voluntary recall by a California onion grower and processor of diced onions that have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. FDA recommends that consumers should not eat, sell or serve recalled onions and should check their freezers if they froze any of the recalled products. 


Salmonella is a type of bacteria that is frequently associated with a number of common foods, including produce. Most people who become infected develop diarrhea, vomiting, fever, chills and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness typically lasts 4 to 7 days and most people recover without treatment. For some, the condition can be severe, requiring hospitalization.
