Huntington Beach, CA, December 1, 2023
Late last month, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) urged all Californians to be ready to protect themselves and their property in support of Flood Preparedness Week. Residents were also reminded that floodwaters can be deadly and carry harmful contaminants.
To be prepared before a flood occurs, Cal OES suggested Californians:
- Keep storm pipes and drains clear
- Move valuable items to higher floors
- Get plastic tarps and sandbags to keep out water
- Learn the best escape routes
“The California Department of Water Resources has warned residents that every county in the state has declared a flood disaster area at least once in the last 20 years,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “People also need to understand that floodwaters can leave threats behind even after the water has receded. Moisture allows for mold growth in as short as 48 hours in damaged homes, schools and businesses. It’s also common for floodwaters to contain sewage and chemicals that are brought indoors. Even cleanup and repair activities could aerosolize lead-based paints and asbestos-containing materials if the proper safety precautions aren’t followed.”
Helping property owners, facility managers and renters identify exposure risks to mold, lead, asbestos, sewage, chemicals and other hazards associated with flood damage are the scientists at LA Testing. With multiple laboratories in California, LA Testing offers laboratory services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment (PPE).
