Huntington Beach, CA, Novmeber 9, 2023
While the rate of new lung cancer cases and deaths is lower in California than many other states, lung cancer is still a major cause of cancer deaths. To raise awareness and educate the public about the many things that can be done to help prevent new cases of lung cancer, November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
Cigarette smoking is considered the number one cause of lung cancer and California is fortunate to have one of the lowest smoking rates in the country. However, lung cancer can also be caused by breathing secondhand smoke, being exposed to substances such as asbestos or radon at home or work, and having a family history of lung cancer.
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that people who have never smoked, but are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or on the job, increase their risk of getting lung cancer by 20% to 30%,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Whether it’s secondhand smoke or concerns over potential exposure to radon, asbestos, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethylene oxide, diesel exhaust, or various forms of silica and chromium that could increase a person’s chances of developing lung cancer and other respiratory conditions, LA Testing is here to help. Our California laboratories offer environmental and industrial hygiene laboratory testing services along with sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and even personal protective equipment.”
Several years ago, LA Testing sponsored an educational video about Lung Cancer Awareness Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/LV7zwQiwaCQ
