Almost 1,400,000 people in California have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Across the entire nation, nearly 16 million adults have the serious lung disease. Millions more have it, but have not been diagnosed and are not being treated cautions the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

COPD refers to a group of diseases, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. Common symptoms of the disease that people often mistake as normal signs of aging include wheezing, shortness of breath, ongoing cough, chest tightness or a combination of all. While cigarette smoke is a leading cause of COPD, CDC warns that exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.

“November is National COPD Awareness Month, a time to educate the public about ways to prevent and manage the condition,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In California, LA Testing’s laboratories offer air and dust testing for many of the common indoor environmental quality (IEQ) pollutants, irritants and allergens that may exacerbate COPD and other respiratory conditions.
