Huntington Beach, CA, October 27, 2023
Last week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it was honoring Children’s Health Month by emphasizing the critical importance of safeguarding children, especially those in vulnerable populations, from environmental threats in the places they live, learn and play.
According to the EPA:
Early exposure to environmental pollutants can have lifelong health implications. Children’s developing bodily systems are more sensitive to pollutants and their unique behaviors can often expose them more to environmental hazards. EPA recognizes that children, especially those in under-resourced communities, are often the most vulnerable to environmental harm.
Weekly areas of focus for Children’s Health Month in 2023 include:
- October 1-7: Protecting children where they live
- October 8-14: Protecting children where they learn
- October 15-21: Protecting children where they play
- October 22-28: International and National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
“Children’s Health Month takes place each October and is a time when the EPA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide a number of resources to spread awareness on reducing exposure to environmental pollutants and indoor air quality contaminants,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In California there are several million children under the age of 5, some of them are being exposed to substances like lead, asbestos, mold, radon and other hazards. In most cases, these exposure risks can be eliminated if they are recognized. At LA Testing, our environmental and indoor air quality laboratories offer testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and monitoring instruments to identify these and many other common exposure risks.”
LA Testing sponsored an educational video about Children’s Health Month several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
