National Safety Month is celebrated each June in California and across the nation. Begun by the National Safety Council, the month-long observance has been taking place since 1996. It is meant to raise awareness of workplace safety and health risks and to increase efforts to reduce occupational injuries, illnesses and deaths.
For workers in the Golden State, the California Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1973 was enacted to assure safe and healthful working conditions by creating the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), better known as Cal/OSHA. The agency enforces effective standards, assists and encourages employers to maintain safe and healthful working conditions, and provides for enforcement, research, information, education and training in the field of occupational safety and health.
“The need for effective EHS programs to protect California’s workforce is significant considering there were 462 fatal occupational injuries and over 450,000 nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses as recently as 2021 according to the Department of Industrial Relations,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Each one of these cases impacted a worker and their family, and collectively are a huge financial cost to employers. These are all reason why LA Testing supports the efforts of National Safety Month year-round with industrial hygiene and EHS testing services for chemical, microbial and radiological hazards at our California laboratories.
