Title Campus Supervisor at a School in California Requires Emergency Medical Attention after Inadvertent Exposure to Fentanyl
Introduction LA Testing and their network of laboratories provide testing services to detect fentanyl and other dangerous drugs from unknown substances to help protect employees and first responders that could be at risk of accidental exposure.

Huntington Beach, CA, October 19, 2022

Last month, a student at a junior high school was arrested for drug possession after a campus supervisor had to be treated with Narcan for a possible overdose after inadvertently coming into contact with fentanyl. The school employee was then transported to an area hospital in stable condition according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

The police department reported that the student had brought approximately 150 fentanyl pills, disguised as Percocet, to the school. The student was searched by the campus supervisor after being involved in an unrelated altercation on campus and the staff member was then accidently exposed via inhalation. The school’s office was temporarily closed to ensure there were no residual risks of exposure to others.

Fortunately, in this instance, the campus supervisor survived due to the quick response of a school police offer who administered Narcan. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine and a lethal dose is just 2 milligrams for most people. The drug has become a major concern as the abuse and illegal use of pharmaceutical and clandestinely produced fentanyl has been found nationwide. It is also increasingly being used as an additive with other illicit drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, meth and MDMA, to increase the potency of those drugs.

“This case goes to show that it’s not just emergency responders at risk of accidental exposure to fentanyl,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Helping to prevent accidental exposures to fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, THC, MDMA, LSD and other illicit drugs are the scientists at LA Testing. We offer drug and unknown substance testing services to identify these and many other hazardous materials to help protect employees and the public through our nationwide network of laboratories.”

LA Testing has sponsored an educational video about fentanyl and potential occupational exposure that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/EHnJ6ed0esI
