A food company out of Sonoma County recently announced the recall of one lot of a frozen vegan mac and cheese product. The voluntary Class I recall, which was posted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recall list, was initiated due to the potential of having trace amounts of milk, which is not declared on the product label.
The frozen food was sold nationwide. The recall notice states that consumers who have an allergy or sensitivity to milk should not consume the recalled lot to avoid the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.
The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include milk, eggs, wheat, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soybeans.
“Kids love macaroni and cheese, unfortunately, milk allergies are one of the more common food allergies found in children, although it can affect people of all ages,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “For anyone with the allergy, avoiding foods, beverages, and supplements with milk from cows and other mammals is the best way to prevent a potential serious reaction. At LA Testing, we help food manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulators, and health officials with food allergen testing services. LA Testing’s food scientists offer FALCPA and other labeling and testing services. These tests can be essential for preventing costly product recalls.”
