Title Lung Cancer Awareness Month in California and Exposure Risks to Airborne Pollutants
Introduction LA Testing provides environmental and industrial hygiene laboratory services, sampling supplies, test kits and air monitoring instruments to identify airborne carcinogens, respiratory irritants, allergens and asthma triggers.

Huntington Beach, CA, November 9th, 2021

While the rate of new lung cancer cases and deaths are lower in California than many other states, lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer deaths in the state and nation. To raise awareness and educate the public about things they can do to help prevent new cases of lung cancer, November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer. Lung cancer can also be caused by breathing secondhand smoke, being exposed to substances such as asbestos or radon at home or work, and having a family history of lung cancer.

“As fewer people smoke cigarettes, lung cancer rates have gradually decreased in California and across the nation,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Focusing attention on environmental factors that could increase cancer risks is also important to continue this trend. The second leading cause of lung cancer is radon, a naturally occurring gas that comes from rocks and dirt and can get trapped in homes and buildings. Workers can also be exposed to substances and chemical compounds on the job that could increase their chances of developing lung cancer. These include asbestos, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethylene oxide, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium to name a few.”

In California, LA Testing offers air, dust and other environmental and industrial hygiene laboratory testing services. They also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment. These services and products help to identify exposure risks to protect families and workers.
