With summer just around the corner, California's beaches, lakes, and rivers will soon be popular destinations as millions of residents and tourists enjoy beach and water attractions over the coming months. For many, this means taking part in water-related activities, such as swimming, surfing, scuba diving, fishing, and boating.

After spending the day at the beach or on the water, most people leave with nothing but great memories; however, the water can cause sickness in some. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that recreational water illness (RWI) outbreaks caused by germs or chemicals found in polluted waters have substantially increased over the past several decades.
