The California Air Resources Board (CARB) reported that as recently as 2014, approximately 4 million adults and 1.2 million children in California had been diagnosed with asthma. Asthma is a chronic lung disease that makes breathing difficult and can even result in fatality. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that there were 387 fatalities in the state of California from asthma in 2018 alone.
Minimizing asthma triggers can reduce the onset of asthma attacks and can often be avoided if people with the disease keep away from environmental asthma triggers. According to CARB: There are many asthma triggers in addition to air pollution. These include pollens, dust mites, animal dander, and fragrances, among others. Typically, an individual asthmatic responds to a unique subset of asthma triggers. Air pollution is a well-documented asthma trigger for some asthmatics. However, the role air pollution plays in initiating asthma is still under investigation and likely involves a complex set of interactions between indoor and outdoor environmental exposures and individual genetic susceptibility.
“To spread awareness and educate the public about ways to mitigate exposure risks, the month of May is recognized as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “This is important as a key part of managing asthma is avoiding environmental asthma triggers. Fortunately, there are indoor environmental quality (IEQ) tests, easy-to-use test kits, and even air monitoring instruments to help identify many of the most common asthma triggers that could be lurking in people’s homes, schools, or businesses. Understanding what is in the indoor air can be crucial for mitigating or eliminating many exposure risks.”
In California, LA Testing has multiple laboratories that offer air, dust, and other IEQ testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, and air monitoring instruments for a broad range of allergens, asthma triggers, and respiratory irritants.
