Chemical Testing in California

Title California’s Prop 65 and Public Health Concerns over Methyl Bromide
Introduction LA Testing provides analytical services to protect the public and help businesses comply with California’s Proposition 65.

In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns over exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. This list includes methyl bromide when used as a structural fumigant.  Methyl bromide, also known as bromomethane, was added to the Prop 65 list in 1993.

Methyl bromide is an organobromine compound that is a colorless, odorless and nonflammable gas. It has in the past been used as a pesticide before some countries began to phase it out during the last decade. It has traditionally been widely used as a soil sterilant with some crops and for seed production.

The chemical has been used as a general purpose fumigant to kill insects and rodents. Methyl bromide is also used as a precursor in the manufacturing of other chemicals and as a solvent.

LA Testing offers analytical services to identify methyl bromide to help prevent exposure to this potentially harmful chemical.  “Because methyl bromide has been shown to deplete the stratospheric ozone layer, plans to phase out the chemical were agreed upon at the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and due to the Clean Air Act,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc., a network of environmental testing laboratories.  “Today, its use is still allowed under the critical exemptions agreed upon at the Montreal Protocol,” he continued.
