Huntington Beach, California, October 2, 2026
October is National Children’s Health Month, highlighting the crucial role healthy environments play in protecting children across California.
Children spend significant time indoors and may be more vulnerable to environmental pollutants than adults due to biological and behavioral differences that can increase exposure risk. California’s diverse climate, geography, and environmental conditions also present unique challenges, including mold, lead, asbestos, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), radon, and wildfire smoke.
“Children’s Health Month is a chance to draw attention to environmental conditions that may affect children throughout California,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Whether in California homes and schools or communities impacted by wildfire smoke, identifying potential environmental hazards is a key step toward creating healthier places for children to live, learn, and play.”
LA Testing supports environmental testing throughout California through its network of laboratories, providing sampling supplies, test kits, air monitoring instruments, and inspection tools. These resources help families, schools, childcare providers, property owners, and building professionals investigate environmental concerns.
Testing can be especially valuable when there are visible signs of mold or water damage, concerns regarding lead or asbestos, unusual odors, indoor air quality issues, or recent renovation and construction activities. Objective testing results can provide valuable information to help guide appropriate next steps.
Because wildfire smoke and other regional environmental conditions can affect both outdoor and indoor air quality, maintaining healthy spaces requires consideration of potential exposure sources both inside and outside the building.
LA Testing previously sponsored an educational video about Children’s Health Month and potential environmental hazards. The video is available at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
