Reports earlier this year of a Legionella outbreak linked to a hospital in Santa Clara County have again highlighted the serious health risks associated with contaminated building water systems. Published reports indicate that at least 18 people were infected as health officials investigated the source of the bacteria and implemented additional water treatment measures.
Legionella bacteria can grow in cooling towers, potable water systems, hot water tanks, decorative fountains, spas, and other building water systems under favorable conditions. Exposure typically occurs when people inhale contaminated water droplets or mist. Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, can pose significant risks to older adults, smokers, and those with weakened immune systems.
The Santa Clara investigation reportedly involved environmental testing and enhanced mitigation efforts to identify the contamination source and reduce exposure risks. Rapid detection and response are critical to limiting the spread of Legionella in healthcare settings and other large facilities.
“Legionella outbreaks underscore the importance of routine environmental monitoring and proactive water management programs,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Identifying contamination early can help building owners and facility managers address potential hazards before illnesses occur.”
LA Testing provides Legionella laboratory testing services for hospitals, commercial buildings, schools, hotels, industrial facilities, and property management companies throughout California. The company analyzes water samples, biofilm, and other environmental materials to help identify Legionella contamination and support remediation and infection control efforts.
In suspected outbreaks, rapid environmental testing can help investigators identify contamination sources and evaluate corrective actions. Routine monitoring and water management strategies can also help organizations comply with industry guidance and reduce risks associated with building water systems.
