Huntington Beach, CA, October 8th, 2021
A California county board of supervisors unanimously approved the beginning process of the closing of a specific airport, in August. This occurred just a short time after a study was released that found increased lead levels in some children living near the airport.
A news release from the county stated:
A study commissioned by the county on lead exposure risks for children living in the area around the identified airport found that the continued use of leaded aviation fuel has contributed to increased blood lead levels, particularly for those within a half-mile of the facility.
The soonest the airport could shut its doors is January, pending approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) according to a supervisor. The supervisor also reported that on a separate path to eliminate lead immediately, the Board voted to pursue converting the airport to lead-free fuel as soon as possible.
“Aviation gasoline, also known as avgas, for piston-engine aircraft is the only remaining lead-containing transportation fuel in the U.S.,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that the use of this fuel is the largest remaining aggregate source of lead emissions to air in the United States.”
To test for lead in airports and surrounding areas, California’s LA Testing operates laboratories that provide environmental and industrial hygiene testing services for lead and other heavy metals. Air, soil, water, dust, paint chip, and other types of samples can all be analyzed. LA Testing also offers sampling supplies and equipment, along with easy-to-use test kits. These services are available to individuals, regulatory agencies, airport administrators, and environmental advocates to detect lead and other exposure risks.
LA Testing also recently sponsored an educational video about avgas and the environment that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/VGgyJ9wCeVo.
